The Unclassifiable Library Remix

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

The Inaugural Book 'Em North Carolina event will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2012. The doors open to the public at 9:30 am and close at 4:00 pm. The event is free.

I'm really looking forward to this event as a librarian, as a parent, and as a member of the community. Our county is the poorest in the state of NC and has one of the worst education systems. It's not that the teachers don't care - but the resources just aren't available for them to work with.

For an event like this to come to our little neck of the woods is exciting. I can't wait to take my daughter, who just started kindergarten this year, and to my great joy has discovered her own love of reading and books. For those of you with kids there will be a full day of readings - every hour on the hour - as well as crafts, face painting, book characters and more. The local Kiwanis group will also be giving out free books to some of the first children to arrive.

Adults can meet and listen to authors, participate in book talks, learn about writing and publishing- and much more.

Book Em was started as a community effort by law enforcement in answer to the correlation between illiteracy and crime rates.

I do hope that this event has a good turn out. I often am saddened by the lack of such events close to this area, but when such things are held turnout isn't always good. How does one fight apathy? I'm going to stay positive though, and continue to spread the word about this wonderful program and hope that many more like it will find their way through our little neck of the woods to the benefit of all.
